Spanish

The last project we did in Spanish Class this year was creating a political cartoon on any event or figure in latin culture.  I chose to base mine off how Mexican Immigrants are commonly unwelcome in the US partially because US citizens believe that these Mexican Immigrants take our money from us with the work they do.  However, I think that Mexicans are so heart-bent on making money that they do jobs that Americans would not do.  In this sense, Mexicans are necessary to the American economy.  This project consisted of three things, an essay about this written in Spanish, a word bank, and a cartoon.

Here is the essay:

Here is my word bank:

Immigrant: Inmigrante
Welcome: Bienvenidos
Same: Mismo
Job: Puestos de Trabajo
Racist: Racistas
Necessary: Necesario
Needs: Necesidades
Get: Obtener
Their: Su
Money: Dinero
Think: Pensar
Do: Hacer

Here is my cartoon:

One of our projects was to make a traditional meal for which ever country we were assigned.  The country I was assigned to was Costa Rica.  The most common and traditional meal for Costa Rica was Gallo Pinto; a black bean and rice meal eaten at pretty much anytime of day.  We made either PowerPoint presentations or short videos on this meal, including all the ingredients, preparation for the dish, how to make the meal and then a description of the country... all in Spanish!

Our next project is writing a conversation in Spanish of a typical conversation in a restaurant.

In Spanish class our project was to study a certain Spanish celebration of our choice.  I chose to work on Cinco de Mayo.  For this project we wrote a simple five paragraph essay on the typical traditions done on this holiday.  My five paragraphs are written below.

In the state of Puebla as well as The United States of America every year on May 5th, the Mexican Army is commemorated in a celebration known as "Cinco de Mayo." Cinco de Mayo celebrates how the unlikely Mexican Army defeated the French in 1862.  Defeating this army meant for freedom for them in that area as well as finally getting Mexico its independence.

Cinco de Mayo is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico and other places celebrating Mexicans and their independence.  This battle was important mostly because of the fact that the Mexican Army had half as many soldiers as the French confederates.  It is also pivotal because since then no European military force has invaded the Americas. The state of Puebla as well as mostly all of America celebrates this holiday, however not much in terms of celebration is done around other places in Mexico.

For the most part, the ways people celebrate is by combining food, music, and dancing.  All members of the family partake in these festivities throughout the day.  From cooking, to setting up for a large venue, to dancing or playing music and singing, this day is definitely a busy one for most.  Traditional Mexican dancers of all ages preform for large crowds to live music multiple times during the day.  Dancers make appearances at places like the White House even, to represent this beloved day for many to see.  Schools all over the country set aside special festivities to complete throughout this day.

These festivities typically take place at a large venue given the amount of people who partake in them.  Places such as large amphitheaters, parks, and indoor venues are a place that would be common to take place in a Cinco de Mayo celebration.  People spend days and days prepping for these celebratory days, whether that be cooking, cleaning, perfecting a dance, or planning what songs to play and sing, people look forward to this holiday for days.  When this day finally rolls around, some of the stress is released, letting yourself let go and soak up the festivals.  In some places in and around Pueblo as well as many places in the U.S. whole parades are made for this day, including floats from all sorts of organizations in that city, schools, and other traditional Mexican parts of this day.

Overall this day is celebrated internationally and is known as the most important holiday for multiple reasons for both Americans as well as those in Mexico.  Cinco de Mayo festivities are looked forward to by many all year long, and provide a fun and exciting day for all in terms of celebrations.  Cinco de Mayo was a very pivotal part of Mexico's past and carrying on that holiday today is traditional for all.  With the food, music, dances and traditions, Cinco de Mayo is a must do holiday!!

In Spanish class, we have been scripting out as well as writing and designing "Telenovelas" in other words, a short soap-opera done completely in Spanish.  Each group is assigned to write their own, and each group member, their own scene.  Our telenovela is about some friends who go trick or treating on Halloween, but the evil villain ends up capturing everyone one by one, leaving just me and Becca to save the day and find everyone...
